Board of Advisors: Alvin Tan
Alvin is Facebook’s Head of Trust & Safety (Southeast Asia), where he helps keep Facebook’s platforms and the people using Facebook’s services safe. He joined Facebook in 2015, where he helped built and lead the company’s Southeast Asia Public Policy team. Alvin’s career spans the private, public and non-profit sectors. He began in the Singapore Government as a tank platoon commander and a military intelligence officer, worked in Oxfam Australia, the United Nations (in the Office of the UN Secretary-General in New York), and was Vice President at Goldman Sachs (Asia-Pacific) before joining Facebook.
Alvin is active in trade associations. He helped build the Asia Internet Coalition (an association of top Asia-Pacific tech companies) as Vice Chairman and was an active member in the US-ASEAN Business Council and a Council Member of the Asia Business Trade Association. He is also passionate about the local community, having volunteered in the Kreta Ayer-Kim Seng (KAKS) community for 14 years primarily serving seniors and the poor . He is currently Secretary to the KAKS Citizens Consultative Committee and Chair of the KAKS Inter-Racial & Religious Confidence Circle (IRCC). He is also a member of the REACH Supervisory Panel and the Media Literacy Council.
Alvin graduated from Sydney University with a First Class Honors in Economics, and a Master in Public Policy from Harvard where he was also International and Global Affairs Fellow at the Belfer Centre for Science and International Affairs.
He joined Advisory’s Board to make a contribution to young people. He believes that careers and life are non-linear, having himself experienced multiple setbacks throughout his own life and career. He repeated a school year and did not qualify for any local universities after faring poorly in his “A” Levels. He is thus grateful to the SAF and Sydney University for giving him a start. He hopes to share his many experiences and inspire Advisory’s members to pursue life anchored on humility, integrity, grit and respectfulness.
